rrgirl contributes: List of U.S. state mottos. I think the original 13 took all the good ones. Virginia’s is awesome; that’s all I’ll say about Ohio. and I like your Nevada much better.
And Hawaii adds: California’s is Eureka!, which sounds more like a game show to me. I grew up in NJ which has something fancy like “Liberty and Prosperity”, but there used to be a t-shirt that was popular back in the day that said “NJ State Motto: Whadda you lookin at?” It seemed more fitting at the time. Today it might be best summed up with “Prosperity or no-prosperity, depending on your county”.
Oh, when I was a kid I thought New Hampshire’s “Live Free of Die”, was a command, not a preference. It used to scare me.
I was a kid when I first saw the New Hampshire motto and the first thing I thought was “Wow! Those people are intense!”
Shouldn’t the New Jersey motto be “What exit?”
The Wikipedia page that rrgirl noted has a link to a page of national mottos. Several countries don’t have mottos. For some reason that made me sad. Finland’s could be “Hey, it’s cold here.” Many mottos invoke God:
- Iraq — الله أكبر (Allahu Akbar, Arabic for “God is Great”)
- United States — In God We Trust (I prefer In God We Trust — All Others Pay Cash)
- United Kingdom — Dieu et mon droit (Why is the British motto in French?)
Aruba’s “One Happy Island” is cute. It sounds more like a tourist bureau slogan, though.
This one reminds me of the infamous Denny Green tirade: Luxembourg — “Mir wëlle bleiwe wat mir sinn.” WE ARE WHO WE SAID WE WERE! It’s really Luxembourgish for “We wish to remain what we are.”
Montenegro wins the Man Up Award with “Čojstvo i junaštvo / Чојство и јунаштво,” Serbian for “Manliness and heroism.”
And I love the attitude of the Scottish motto, “Nemo me impune lacessit” which is kind of like “I’m gonna get you, sucka!” It’s actually Latin for “No one provokes me with impunity.”
The DP Show could use a motto.
Hey, Hawaii! How about putting up a list on Palaver?
My contribution: Passion Bucket Lives Here.
In Latin: “Perturbatio Bucket Ago Hic.”
