The New Dan Patrick Show: A Day with the Race Card?

Filed under: Lou Patrick's Pet Human Dan — Keith Olbermann Is Evil @ 07:19:06

Barry Bonds was indicted yesterday on charges related to the testimony he gave in 2003 regarding the use of performance-enhancing drugs. This is a big story; I’m sure it will be one of DP’s top stories today. What are the odds that a lot of listeners will call or email in to complain about race being a factor in Bonds’ indictment?

Ever since DP struck out on his own his interactions with listeners are much more reasonable than when he was with ESPN. He used to get quite a few blithering idiots when he was at the Worldwide Leader. (Was Phil the Showkiller’s prime directive to select the loudest, most obnoxious callers?) Dan still gets callers who challenge his opinion, but at least they are not as annoying as the ones who called the old show.

Over the past couple of weeks it seems to me that he’s been taking more calls and reading more listener emails. Early on he didn’t have much interaction with listeners; maybe no one was calling in or emailing. Or perhaps he now has staff to screen calls and emails, bringing the most interesting ones to his attention.

DP is in Chicago for a couple of days. He must be huddling with folks at the home office.

Yo, Content Factory people! I have just one word to say to you:

Plastics. Content.

  1. You certainly are spot on in the race card thing. I am listening to some of those callers right now (the reason they are less idiotic I imagine is that those old ESPN listeners were holdovers from The Herd). Dan needs to stop bringing up Pete Rose though as a counterexample. That was back when many of his listeners were in kindergarten. I bet many of them have little to no idea who Rose was. I also think one caller made a good point when he mentioned that there is nothing wrong with going after Bonds, it is just that black players’ negative behavior fills up the air time like they are the only ones out there. There are plenty of white players with HGH connections. Perhaps it is just the home run record that brings all the attention to Bonds? Hard to figure that one out because the issue is so multi-layered.

  2. DING! Homer bell for calling the race card in today’s show. The comments were rational except for one of the last guys (persecution of Bonds=racism=America’s screwed up foreign policy.) He’s taking more calls than before; they help move the show along and fill time so he doesn’t re-run iterviews and re-tell his stories. Sometimes there’s too much filler, repeating stories and talking about things he sees in the paper. Not creative and I expect better from him.
