Congratulations to Palaver for getting mentioned by Dan Patrick on yesterday’s show. (At precisely 13 minutes and 35 seconds of the second hour of the show — I finally listened to it this morning.) Way to go, Hawaii!
Now what can you do about getting him to put Lou on the show?
Maybe he can have Lou interview the winner of the Westminster Dog Show.
I hope DP will take a look at Evil Palaver, which is just as much a Palaver project as it is an Evil one even though it happens to be posted here. Thanks to all who have sent in suggestions; I’ll update the list later today.
Thanks to Hawaii, Karl, and judie4mets for their contributions, all of which have not yet been incorporated into the list. I wasn’t sure what to call it; “People we’d like to hear on the Dan Patrick Show” is descriptive but not very interesting. “Evil Palaver” has a nice ring to it.
I put the list on a separate page so that it can be easily found. There is some overlap across categories (David Letterman could be placed in “Celebrities” as well as “Media”) and certain individuals fit more than one category (I put Bill Bradley in “Sports Figures,” but he could be in “Political Figures”).
The chance that DP will get Doris Kearns Goodwin on the show? Slim-to-none. As much as DP pokes fun at Bob Costas, I think he really wants to be Bob Costas: sports journalist and Renaissance Man. I like DP a lot, but I don’t really think he has what it takes to be like Costas.
Evil Palaver is a work in progress. Suggestions for additions, improved organization and/or layout, etc. gladly accepted.
Sheesh, I typed out this huge comment thing and it got eaten. Sigh. …
Oops. My spam filter ate your comment. (I’m not sure why. I’m using the default settings, with which I’m sure you’re familiar as Palaver, like this blog, is hosted on WordPress. I check the filter on a regular basis, but wasn’t in BlogLand much yesterday.) My apologies, and thanks for taking the time to repost the comment. I de-spammed your first comment, so now they both show up.
Thanks for your contribution! Ditto, Karl. I had totally forgotten about Eddie Vedder; he sang “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” at Wrigley when the Mets played the Cubs there this past season (the weekend when Tom Glavine won his 300th game):
(Note when he throws out the first pitch he does it from the pitching rubber, not from the front of the mound as some do, and ball gets to his catcher on the fly — he doesn’t bounce it. Plus he’s wearing a Cubs jersey.)
I’ll work up the Suggestion List and get it posted today or tomorrow.
It’s been a nice Thanksgiving weekend so far. Was hoping to listen to a download of the DP Show as we cleaned up Thursday night after the turkey feast, but it wasn’t available. And at present neither it or Friday’s show are up on the KLAC site. A little disappointing, but I guess KLAC’s production staff might be a little thin over the holidays.
… We should get a list together of possible non-traditional sports related interviews for DP. I’m gonna think about this some….. (and if you are interested in putting it up I’ll link it from Palaver. If not I’ll put it there).
I jotted down some names the other night and the list is 50+ right now. Some are sports figures, but ones you never hear from or read about. When’s the last time anyone interviewed Tex Winter? He created the Triangle Offense that Phil Jackson has used so well with the Chicago Bulls and the Los Angeles Lakers. (OK, maybe not so good with the Lakers lately ….) Maybe someone like Winter is too X-and-0-ish, but I wouldn’t mind some of that on the show.
I’ll organize the list and get it posted sometime this weekend. At present, I have the following categories:
42 days? 42? nope, I can’t process that right now. one holiday at a time.
turkey day is going to be a little different this year; empty places, unfamiliar roles, a new menu served on new dishes. but I hear that the Macy’s parade will be on schedule, and we love mashed potatoes, and pie, and turkey, from meatloaf to roast to left-overs. it will be OK.
I love mashed potatoes, although usually don’t make them for Thanksgiving because we are often overloaded with stuffing and yams or sweet potatoes. (For a dedicated Foodie I am embarrassed to admit that I don’t know the difference between the two. Here’s a scientific comparison of the two.)
On regular potatoes: I read The Secret? It’s Not the Potatoes last week and was shocked (shocked!) to discover that I have the wrong kind of potato masher. When I bought a masher I bought the same kind that I grew up with. How was I to know it was the wrong kind? Well, it might not provide the most efficient mash-per-stroke, but it requires more of a workout. Which is fine with me. I love the process of cooking: from the buying of the food, to the preparation, to the eating. OK, maybe cleaning up afterwards can be anti-climactic, but it’s all part of the process.
I love Thanksgiving. Women usually get stuck with the cooking, but I love the chance to cook for a large group. We’ll probably have six people over — which isn’t many compared to some other families, but it’s a lot for us. Every year I think about doing something different: maybe roast duck instead of a turkey, maybe a seven-course Chinese dinner …. But every year Tradition pulls me back and I wind up doing turkey and stuffing. The cats get upset with all the activity, but they love roast turkey so they put up with it. It can be difficult when family, etc. changes take you out of your Tradition. So it’s good to have the Usual Suspects around: turkey, stuffing, the Macy’s parade, football games. (I won’t be able to listen to the Dan Patrick Show live on Thursday. Tradition dictates that we watch the Macy’s parade as we get the turkey ready.)
Warren Buffett seems like a nice guy. He’s really, really, really rich but he doesn’t act like a Mr. Moneybags. With all his wealth he could live in New York City in a high-rise called “Buffett Towers,” but he lives in Omaha, Nebraska. He eats at Dairy Queen. He advocates for a more equitable tax structure in this country.
And he helped Alex Rodriguez re-sign with the Yankees, thereby keeping A-Rod off the Mets. I’m not sure how interested the Mets were in Alex. We need pitching, not hitting, but it would have been hard to pass up one of the best players in history. I wasn’t crazy over the idea of Alex being in the orange-and-blue. Yes, he’s a great player, but he’s so high-maintenance. If he had joined the Mets I would have cheered for him, but it wouldn’t necessarily have been with a lot of feeling. But Buffett helped A-Rod re-establish communications with the Yankees, so the Mets are saved from having to deal with the A-Rod circus.
In light of Buffett’s foray into the world of sports, DP should get an interview with him. I’m sure Buffett doesn’t do a lot of sports talk shows, but he’s just the kind of person who would shine with DP. Besides A-Rod’s negotiations with the Yankees there are some good sports-related topics Dan could discuss with Buffett:
The folks over at DanPatrick.com finally had one of those hand-to-forehead “I could have had a V8!” moments and realized they should list the radio stations that carry The Dan Patrick Show. (Their initial strategy seemed to be to let potential listeners play Where’s Waldo? in searching for the show.) A new Where’s Dan? link on the page takes the user to a list of affiliates that air the show. I’m not sure when the revelatory moment struck, but kudos to Hawaii at Palaver who has been advocating this for weeks and perhaps spurred Team DP into action. It gives me hope that maybe someone over there will stumble upon this site and take the hint that while many fans like the new show it could also use some new content.
Content Factory … content.
Content Factory … content.
I don’t know. Am I making too grand a leap of logic here?
Barry Bonds was indicted yesterday on charges related to the testimony he gave in 2003 regarding the use of performance-enhancing drugs. This is a big story; I’m sure it will be one of DP’s top stories today. What are the odds that a lot of listeners will call or email in to complain about race being a factor in Bonds’ indictment?
Ever since DP struck out on his own his interactions with listeners are much more reasonable than when he was with ESPN. He used to get quite a few blithering idiots when he was at the Worldwide Leader. (Was Phil the Showkiller’s prime directive to select the loudest, most obnoxious callers?) Dan still gets callers who challenge his opinion, but at least they are not as annoying as the ones who called the old show.
Over the past couple of weeks it seems to me that he’s been taking more calls and reading more listener emails. Early on he didn’t have much interaction with listeners; maybe no one was calling in or emailing. Or perhaps he now has staff to screen calls and emails, bringing the most interesting ones to his attention.
DP is in Chicago for a couple of days. He must be huddling with folks at the home office.
Yo, Content Factory people! I have just one word to say to you:
