I’m not sure how diet has entered into my Mets’ fandom. It’s probably because I fasted every day this week and I’m going loopy from lack of nutrition.
Early in last night’s game I told myself “If we win, I get to have ice cream for dessert.” Which was fine as long as we had a lead. But once Florida took the lead, I began to sweat. I really, really wanted ice cream. We have a carton of the house favorite, Breyer’s Mint Chocolate Chip, in the freezer. It’s practically begging to be eaten. A great relief was felt in the top of the 9th inning, when we regained the lead. (I could practically taste the ice cream at this point.) And great anxiety when we gave the lead right back in the bottom of the inning. And when Dan Uggla knocked in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th I felt like he stole my ice cream.
Barb advised in One from Column A and One from Column B:
KOIE, you really do need to eat something during the day. With respect to Ramadan, it’s not healthy to not eat.
I’ve read and heard numerous times that “breakfast is the most important meal of the day,” but I’ve never been a breakfast person. A cup or two of coffee and I’m good to go until 2-3pm. I start feeling lightheaded around then. To compound matters, and I shouldn’t confess this because it makes me into even a bigger dork, I’ve been feeling a wee bit sick all week. Actually, that’s what has probably led to my lack of appetite. Starve a cold and feed a fever is the old saying, but I’ve been feverish so I should be eating. I’ve fasted like this before for no reason other than to see if I can do it. It’s a little bit of a challenge, but not that hard. Americans are spoiled; we consume too much of everything: food, gas, oil, you-name-it. I like to think I can control myself somewhat better than the average American.
Maybe my fasting is to heighten the experience of suffering, to which the Mets have contributed quite nicely. I can’t believe how we’ve played lately. The inconsistency is maddening.
I hope we win tonight. I’d really like to have ice cream after dinner.
