Dan Patrick: The Farewell Tour (iii)

Filed under: Department of En Fuego — Keith Olbermann Is Evil @ 17:28:02

rrgirl writes in Requiem for The Dan Patrick Show:

… please add Vaughn Williams’ Adagio for Strings near the Piet Jesu. either one will invoke prostrate grief for me.

I think you mean Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings. I played it in orchestra (probably high school — it’s kind of intense for junior high, although our orchestra teacher picked out a lot of really great stuff for us), so was familiar with it before Platoon came out. I’m not familiar with the “Pie Jesu” but have been reading some on it and listening to different versions. It’s on the Farewell Tour playlist.

There are a number of versions of the Adagio on YouTube, but for now here’s the symphonic version. I’ll work the others into DP’s Farewell Tour eventually.

  1. righto. I was too lazy to dig through my CD’s and the internet was too dodgy to let me do a proper search. I deleted it from my iPod almost as soon as I loaded it. I’m wiping away tears as I listen and write this. it takes me places I can’t afford to go too often - better to leave it on a dusty shelf most of the time.
still, thanks for the correction, and this version is perfectly lovely. I was aware of it way before Platoon, though not as early as jr. high. back then, I was a half-ways serious piano student, now I’m just a half-ways serious listener.

for the Pie Jesu, of the many versions by many composers, the ALW theatrical tune is the one I know best, being a child of my times. So, to clear my head, I sifted through a few of the zillions out there and came to rest on this. the comments indicate there is plenty of backstory on the performers. I like the simple “choir practice” pretense without all the ALW hoopla.

  2. I haven’t yet said anything on this, but what can you say? It really was a big surprise. Dan’s moving on.

The good news is maybe we don’t have to mourn as intensely as we feared. It sounds as if Dan is lining up his future in radio even as we speak, and we may well have more of Dan and Keith together than we ever dreamed of back when Keith’s time with Dan was necessarily limited by his tenuous relationship with ESPN.

Only time will tell, but good things could be in the future. Very good things.

  3. Scoop,
I appreciate that our blogger facilitates a little intra-comment communication now and then. not to over-reach her gracious hospitality, I have to ask - east or west sider? that dichotomy confuses me a little as I consider myself a south-sider except that makes no sense and I know you know what I mean. so, if I am to be defined by what I’m not, I’m more east-sider than west, but it’s by default…not that it matters to a girl who was born in Barberton, grew up elsewhere, came back to Ohio via Kent and left her heart in Akron on the way to a view across the valley…
OK. regarding DP and KO and the future of broadcasting. their joint appearance on Letterman was the public signal to me that the earth was shifting on its axis and in retrospect I’m thinking my man Dave was in on it. for a few days, the lack of news was mildly exciting, but then I began to realize that a little bit of fun in my day might be slipping out of reach. anxiety is a hard habit to break. I only have a few broken hearts left in me and I’m way over invested in these radio guys. the most recent press releases suggest my best hopes may come true. free of ESPN, maybe DP and KO will make history together yet again. but, I also understand the frustration our blogger has expressed. in a dark moment, I had to face the future without the Big Show ever again except for my hoard of podcasts and whatever xm lets me save. its enough to make a girl howl.

  4. Hey rrgirl,

For the record…far, FAR east sider. So far it doesn’t even count as a side. Or, at least, grew up that way. And yes, I know what you mean when you say “south sider”…what would frighten me is if you called yourself a “north sider”…

I agree with you that in retrospect, we should’ve known something was up from the moment Dan and Keith did a joint appearance on Letterman. And I totally relate to your anxiety. I too am overinvested and you realize all too much how much you looked forward to hearing these guys every afternoon in your work day when they are gone. It IS painful. Maybe this is the time to look back on our “Best of The Big Shows” and get an extra laugh or two out of them.

Or, as Dan might put it: “When I find myself in times of trouble/Watching Heather Mills lose her leg…”
