Fido would like some kibble mixed in with his French vanilla.
Good to hear the Dan Patrick Show with Dan Patrick yesterday. I don’t know about you folks, but it’s always a bit disconcerting for me when the DP Show intro plays and then a voice other than Dan’s comes out of the radio. It’s like turning on a Dodger broadcast and hearing someone other than Vin Scully. I didn’t think DP would be absent from the show so much during the NBA playoffs; I don’t remember him missing so many shows during last year’s playoffs. I’m glad his wish came true and that the LeBron James-led Cleveland Cavaliers will be in the finals. The San Antonio Spurs are very solid, but I hope the Cavs win at least a couple games to make it interesting. But hey: You never know. Golden State did beat Dallas.
DP’s recent substitutes did a good job. Bob Valvano’s regular show is on very late so I don’t hear it often, but I like his style. He’s DP-like in being an intelligent, relaxed host; you feel like they’re sitting on a couch in your livingroom talking sports. Not one of those YELLING SPORTS GUYS. Erik Kuselias has appeared to have morphed away from the YELLING SPORTS GUY type. The last couple of times he’s subbed for DP he’s sounded more like a normal person. I thought Keith Olbermann might be on when Michael Kay subbed. Kay does tv broadcasts for the Yankees; I assume he is more of a baseball guy and that might draw KO away from saving the democracy for a short while. There must be something in KO’s contract that says he doesn’t have to be on the DP Show if DP is not there.
I wasn’t surprised that DP didn’t cover Gary Sheffield’s comments on African Americans in baseball. Sheff made Mike and Mike’s Just Shut Up! segment today, telling you just about all you need to know about what he said. It’s bad enough when a certain group of listeners turn every topic into one of race. DP doesn’t need to step into what Sheffield has laid out in a buffet spread of anger, ignorance, and bigotry.
If DP covered the Westminster Dog Show and a black lab won Best in Show over a white poodle (or vice versa), what would be the fallout? Do dogs play the race card?

If a Mexican chihuahua beat a black lab Gary Sheffield would go ballistic!

Dan may be happy our Cavs are in the Finals, but if he really is, it would be nice for him to lay off the insults to Cleveland. The other day he made a doozy with Rick Reilly–they were talking about the contrroversy over the size of a LeBron James banner downtown and he said something to the effect of “Come on, this is Cleveland–wouldn’t you want to cover it up as much as possible?” Reilly actually came to the city’s defense, saying it was “not that bad.”
Dan, my man. You will be here soon, and it will not be a comfortable stay for you if too many people here know you said that. Before you know it, they may start hurling the jokes at you that Northern Ohioans fling at Southern Ohioans. You really don’t want that, do you? I didn’t think so.
