Don’t Use that Tone of Voice with Me!

jockstrap.jpgrrgirl, on What the Fluff?:

a long time ago I decided that daytime TV = cure for the flue. really, how long can a person lay on the sofa with that for company? we’ve come a long way in the multi-media universe, but the free ubiquitous all-American daytime TV menu leaves me starved for better fare.

mmmm…coconut.

When I was a kid I liked watching Concentration, Password, and Jeopardy. I thought those were really great game shows. Mom’s show was As the World Turns which, along with other soap operas, I found terribly complicated and uninteresting. The daytime talk shows were with Mike Douglas and Merv Griffin, who I thought were pretty good until I got old enough to stay up late and watch The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. There will never be another Johnny Carson. I was too young to have seen Steve Allen and Jack Paar on The Tonight Show; I’ve only seen clips of their performances. I would rather watch old Tonight Shows with Carson, Paar, and Allen (and throw in the old Dick Cavett Shows, too) than just about anything that is currently on prime time and late night tv.

With network, cable, and dish tv there truly is something for everyone. I remember when cable was new; the idea of paying for television programs seemed outrageous, but a selling point was that there would be no commercials. That idea didn’t go very far. And with fifteen bazillion channels available, how come there is hardly ever something on worth watching?

It’s easy to criticize the tv programs that other people like. But, hey: As long as they’re not in the basement cooking meth or driving 55 in a 25mph zone it’s OK with me.

Listening to DP and KO the past two days reminded me of both the skrieking kids on The Today Show and the screamin’ ladies of The View. Geez! Sure, Dan and Keith often go at it like an old married couple. But on Tuesday and Wednesday they were like an old married couple heading for divorce court. Keith is right: Dan should have taken his birthday off. It would have made him feel better.

It didn’t help that NBA commissioner David Stern was so annoying and flippant in his Wednesday interview with Dan. I don’t follow the NBA closely, but have always enjoyed Stern’s comments when he’s been on with DP. Perhaps it was because of the recent flood of comments and criticism regarding fouls and penalties in the NBA playoffs, but I found his responses to Dan very chippy — a word DP used to describe the Suns-Spurs series. It was like that tone of voice you’d give to your parents when you were a know-it-all, full-of-yourself teenager. My father would say “Don’t use that tone of voice with me” when we pulled that act on him, which is what DP should have said to Stern. I’ll bet Dan felt like he was dealing with one of his children and not the NBA commissioner.

Ken Griffey, Jr. made a great riposte to a fan who’d been rude to him:

There are Ken Griffey Jr. fans and there are Ken Griffey Jr. supporters. The two worlds met at Dodger Stadium, when the Cincinnati Reds outfielder won over a heckler with a one-of-a-kind souvenier.

A new size-XXL athletic supporter.

Dan should do something similar with Stern. Maybe send him a NuttyBuddy.
