Political Hot Stove

Karl comments on Hail Mary:

Great post, as usual. You are the Sports Center of political comment.

Gee, thanks. I like to think of myself as the Washington Week in Review of ESPN. (I like Gwen Ifill, but miss Ken Bode.)

Did anyone else catch Senator Joseph Biden on today’s Meet the Press saying the administration was praying for a Hail Mary pass with their Iraq policy? I met Biden back in 1988 when he was running for president; I was working on a friend’s campaign and he persuaded me to ride a bus for three hours to go see Biden at a big campaign stop. Biden dropped out of that race after charges of plagiarism arose, but he was later cleared.

I like how Biden gave Russert a straight answer to the question on his presidential aspirations. As regards 2008, it’s getting complicated to the point where I need a scorecard. I suppose this is still the hot stove period for the 2008 elections, but in politics there really is no off-season.

Sacrilege!

damn–now i have to watch the game to see if dan does the ‘i’

Sheila bestows an honor:
As a legal resident of the state of Ohio, I officially grant you the title of ‘Honorary Ohioan’ because you like ‘The Best Damn Band in the Land’ and ‘Script Ohio’.

rrgirl observes:
loved the video. isn’t that head-snap on the pivot step great? and the “i” dot tuba player goose-stepping with the drum major…can Dan’s knees take it? he may have to settle for stepping smartly without the high kicks. and thanks for mentioning the moon over Cleveland - we had moonbows earlier this week.

I must graciously decline the title of “Honorary Ohioan.” As a proud graduate of the University of Washington I think they would take my diplomas back if I was associated with a Big Ten school. (I think it stinks that the Rose Bowl is no longer Pac-10 versus Big 10.) Plus there’s that fuzzy math issue: 11 schools in the Big 10?

How big is it, Johnny? It’s so big there are 11 schools in it!

Good point re DP’s knees. He might need a stunt double to do the high-stepping part.

Phil?

Here is the video from the Ohio State-Michigan game in November 2006. What I like about this one is that they show the Drum Major and the Tuba Guy exchanging 5’s before they do the “i.” But ABC should have shown the Tuba Guy saluting both sides of the stadium, and Brent Musburger cuts in before the end of the performance. (Musburger gets too chatty at times, but he’s a good announcer. College football is not the same without Keith Jackson. The Fox announcers for the BCS games are so-so, although we did like Terry Bradshaw and Howie Long at the Suger Bowl.)

(I thought is was “full moon rising on the Cuyahoga River.” Oops. I hope Randy won’t hold it against me.)
