He Hate Me

Two out of two Toms like Dan Patrick Sings “A Lou Holtz Christmas”:

TOM W writes: THIS IS GREAT! THANKS FOR POSTING – BEEN LOOKING ALL OVER FOR THIS.

TOM R adds: 10 minutes of great radio. I heard this on the car ride home for Christmas, and it was so funny I was laughing out loud (being a Dan Patrick & Killers fan both). This is one of the first and few times I have tried to find something I heard on the radio on the net, and I lucked out in finding this site. Thanks!

Dudes, you are very welcome. I listen to the clip every now and again and every single time it’s a Laugh My *ss Off Moment. DP provides a lot of material for laughing out loud

But what’s the deal with Hating on Lou Holtz?

When people come to a WordPress blog from another site the WordPress stats engine logs the URL of the referring site. (That’s the basic WP stat feature; other stat software can be used, but I have no interest in CSI’ing the people who read this blog.) Since I posted DP’s audio clip there have been a lot of hits from two or three sports forums. Being curious I clicked on those URL links to see what was up on the other end, and what I found were things like “Lou Holtz sucks,” “I hate the guy,” “Holtz is an idiot,” “I hate Lou Holtz,” etc.

I wasn’t aware that Lou Holtz was a murderer or a child molester or participated in genocide. I know of him only as the former coach of Notre Dame and South Carolina, the guy who does a funny ad for (I think) Choice Hotels, the guy who DP likes to impersonate. So I went to Wikipedia to see if there were any skeletons in the Lou Holtz closet.

Uh …. Nope.

Not really, anyway. A few things listed under “Controversy,” but no felonies.

I don’t know if Lou Holtz has ever been on the DP Show or if he’s mad at DP for the impersonation. I guess if he was mad it would have been reported. When someone works in the public eye they have to develop a sense of humor and a thick skin. And imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Gerald Ford remarked on his Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger “Henry publicly was a gruff, hard-nosed German-born diplomat, … but he had the thinnest skin of any public figure I ever knew.” Which I found interesting as all my memories of Kissinger are of him in govenment during a very trying time and I assumed all those government types were stoic and emotionless. Ford certainly had a great sense of humor, as recalled by George H.W. Bush in his eulogy.

Truthfully, I kind of feel bad for posting the clip as it has given the Lou Holtz Haters more “ammunition.” But it gives others something to laugh and smile about. And as for me, when I laugh I’m not laughing at Holtz, I’m laughing with him and I’m laughing with DP. Who, when he’s not impersonating Holtz, is impersonating someone else and pretty much sounding like James Stewart.

So if this gets back to Lou Holtz:
Coach, you’re a good guy. You have a great sense of humor. And I love that motel ad you do. (I wish I could find it on YouTube.) It makes me want to jump in the car and take a road trip.

Toys for Boys

paulab on Culture Pop:

It’s dudette, and thanks! It’s one of my favorite movies of all time!

I was amused with the video of “A Secretary is Not a Toy.” I wish I could say that it stands as an ancient marker of a time when women were treated as things, but women are still treated as things. It’s not as bad or as prevalent as it was when “How to Succeed in Business” was written, but it still exists. Kind of like racism — it’s pretty much not out there in the open, but it’s still around.

In the various news stories on Gerald Ford I heard one mention that while president he had signed the bill that authorized the admission of women into the military academies.

H.R.6674:

Title VIII: General Provisions – Requires the Secretary of the military department concerned to take such action as may be necessary and appropriate to insure that female individuals shall be eligible for appointment and admission to the service academies beginning with appointments to the academies in calendar year 1976.

Amazing, I think, how we take such things for granted. It really wasn’t that long ago. And it’s something I should remember. When I lived in NYC in the early 1980s I worked with someone who had moved to there from North Dakota (or Montana — some extremely rural state) for graduate work. Getting into Cornell University Medical College was a fine achievement, but another motivation was to be on the east coast because her sister was in one of the first classes at West Point to include women. She wanted to be nearby for moral support. I thought that was pretty cool.

At any rate, here’s another politically incorrect piece from the medieval 1960s. It’s so corny; I really like it.

(I have no idea what the images in this video are supposed to mean, but I love the surrealistic action going on between the pictures and the lyrics.)

Wives and Lovers

Hey, little girl,
Comb your hair, fix your make-up.
Soon he will open the door.
Don’t think because
There’s a ring on your finger,
You needn’t try any more.

For wives should always be lovers, too.
Run to his arms the moment he comes home to you.
I’m warning you …

Day after day,
There are girls at the office,
And men will always be men.
Don’t send him off
With your hair still in curlers.
You may not see him again.

For wives should always be lovers, too.
Run to his arms the moment he comes home to you.
He’s almost here …

Hey, little girl
Better wear something pretty,
Something you’d wear to go to the city.
And dim all the lights,
Pour the wine, start the music.
Time to get ready for love.

Dim all the lights,
Pour the wine, start the music.
Time to get ready for love.
Time to get ready, time to get ready for love.
Time to get ready, time to get ready for love.
