Man Up

(One of my favorite schticks on Mike and Mike.)

Poor John Kerry.

OK, by now everyone knows what he said and what he meant to say, President Bush’s snippy comment, Senator Kerry’s riposte to the comment, mumblings and grumblings from various elected officials, yakking from the media talking heads, miscellaneous and sundry eruptions from BlogLand, yada, yada, yada.

Sound and fury, baby!!! (That’s my Dick Vitale impersonation.)

Not quite signifying nothing, though.

We already knew that Senator Kerry tends to be verbose and is not exactly Mr. Extemporaneous. And who is President Bush to criticize the senator? It’s not like W’s got a firm grasp on the English language. But after the way the left has ridiculed the President for his misuse of language, it was only natural for the Republicans to jump all over Senator Kerry for his poorly-executed joke.

Hey, live by the sword, die by the sword.

Or perhaps in this case it is “Live by the tongue, die by the tongue.”

At any rate, Senator Kerry made a mistake and he apologized for it.

Way to go.

I don’t see it as him caving in to President Bush’s criticism/carping. Nor do I view him as less of a man for apologizing. If anything, I see him as more of a man for owning up to his mistake.

Mom would say “Clean up after yourself.”

Coach Wooden would say “Don’t make excuses.”

Greeny and Golic would say “Man up.”

There’s too much youa culpa going around these days, and not just in politics. If something goes wrong it’s always someone else’s fault. Owning up for your behavior isn’t fashionable. You’re supposed to maintain the façade of perfection.

Be perfect, or die trying. Like Alex Rodriguez.

I’ve always felt that John Kerry was an OK senator. Wasn’t really enthused with his campaign for president leading up to the 2004 election. Not sure if I’d vote for him in 2008. But I have more respect for him now than I did a few days ago.

And President Bush? Whether the Republicans hold serve next Tuesday to maintain control of Congress or whether the Democrats can win big and infuse some balance back into the federal government, one thing is certain:

Two more years of George W. Bush.

Yikes.
